The dining hall was alive and bustling as I flew in. No one paid any attention to me as I sat down late. Iâd waited in my room for Asher to come by and collect me, but he never arrived, so Iâd resisted knocking on his door and decided to fly to dinner without him. Who cared if I was alone, he could be sick and I wouldnât care, heâd left me high and dry in the library and I was mad. Iâd spent the whole day with the black magic book in my room, hiding out.
âZia, good to see you.â Finn smiled next to me and I nodded, forcing a fake smile. I scanned the table and realized Asher wasnât here. That selfish ogre was hiding out in his room. Was he embarrassed that weâd shared a kiss? Maybe he was with another fae. The thought sickened me. How had I gone from not caring about the Brat Prince at all to feeling a wave of jealousy when I thought about him in the arms of another?
The dinner went by uneventfully. No one spoke to me as we were served sweetmeats and rum. As it turned out, Cain wasnât present too- thankfully- so Finn and I made small talk for a short while, and I excused myself after the King and Queen had left.
I flew slowly back to my room, dreading the thought of being alone with my thoughts tonight.
Maybe I had to swallow my pride and actually talk to Asher. Ignoring him was easier and after hiding out in my room reading about black magic for the whole afternoon, I felt like I should probably suck it up and say something to him. Not that he was being very mature about the whole thing either.
I landed softly outside his door, mentally bracing myself for an argument, perhaps the cold shoulder but nothing, literally nothing could have braced me for the sounds I heard through his door.
Moans, grunts, and sounds that made my stomach churn sourly were coming from his room, I reeled back like Iâd been punched.
Asher and I had shared a steamy kiss in the library less than twelve hours ago and now he was in bed with another fae. It may not have been his first kiss, but it certainly felt real enough for my first time.
My heart felt weird and heavy, almost like it ached, my stomach dropped and I swallowed back the horrific feeling in my chest. I hastily flew back to my room, not daring to be caught in the corridor listening at Asherâs door. Tears filled my eyes and I flew straight to the bathroom, filling up a tub and stripped off before sinking into the hot water and crying my eyes out.
I should have known better than to trust the Brat Prince and his games.
